Conversations on the Road: Friendship, Sex Ed, and 900 Miles of Connection

There’s something special about road trips. The way the miles stretch out in front of you, the unfiltered conversations that start somewhere around hour three and get deeper as the road gets longer. That’s exactly what’s happening right now with me and my friend Sandy.

Sandy’s a gynecologist, and we’re currently on a long-haul road trip together—headed to our college reunion. Fourteen hours in the car (nine yesterday, six and a half today), and you can imagine we’re covering a lot of ground—both literally and conversationally.

Naturally, the topic of sex came up. When you put a polyamorous woman and a gynecologist in the front seat of a car for that long, you’re going to dive deep. We've been unpacking everything from STIs to coffee (yes, coffee—we needed it), and having real, layered, intimate conversations about health, pleasure, and the realities of living an ethically non-monogamous life.

What I love most is how open and curious the dialogue has been. There’s no shame. Just facts, laughter, empathy, and a genuine desire to understand each other’s experiences. These are the kinds of conversations that remind me how important it is to keep learning and keep talking—especially about topics that impact our bodies and relationships.

I’ll be sharing more soon, especially a new perspective I’ve had on HPV. It’s one of those “oh wow” revelations that I think a lot of people might benefit from. So stay tuned for that.

For now, we’re stopping for gas and snacks—road trip essentials—and pushing through to Iowa. ETA: 1 p.m. local time. We’re excited. I feel so full from these hours of real connection, and I’m reminded once again how powerful intentional friendship can be.

Hope you're having a good day too—whether you're driving toward something or just holding space for meaningful moments.
